Washington, D.C. - Tomorrow at 1:30 p.m., the Immigration and Border Security Subcommittee will hold a hearing entitled “The Separation of Nuclear Families Under U.S. Immigration Law.” At present, about 88,000 green cards are made available each year to the spouses and minor children of legal permanent residents but the demand is much higher. The wait list for these green cards is currently two-and-a-half years long but in the past it has been as long as six years. Washington, D.C. - Tomorrow at 10:00 a.m., the Immigration and Border Security Subcommittee will hold a hearing on how to increase American competitiveness in the global economy through high-skilled immigration. The hearing will explore ideas to improve American employers’ access to highly skilled and educated foreign workers and students when no American workers can be found. Tomorrow’s hearing will also examine ways to make it more feasible for foreign entrepreneurs to create jobs in the U.S.

Chairman Goodlatte: I rise in support of the “Academic Competition Resolution of 2013.” This resolution establishes an academic competition in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) which shall be held each year among students in each Congressional district and allows the Committee on House Administration to prescribe the regulations that will govern this competition.
Washington, D.C. - According to press reports and sources, the House Judiciary Committee has learned that the Obama administration has ordered the release of an unspecified number of illegal immigrants in detention. These detained illegal immigrants have either been charged or convicted of a crime, have a final order of deportation, are fugitives, or are suspected gang members. Washington, D.C. - Tomorrow at 2:30 p.m., the Immigration and Border Security Subcommittee will hold a hearing entitled “How E-Verify Works and How it Benefits American Employers and Workers.” E-Verify, created in 1996 and operated by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, is a useful tool for U.S. employers to check the legal status of their newly hired employees. Specifically, the Social Security numbers of new hires are checked against Social Security Administration and Department of Homeland Security records in order to help ensure that new hires are genuinely eligible to work. The program quickly confirms 99.5% of work-eligible employees.
