Washington, D.C. – The House Judiciary Committee today approved by a vote of 25-5 a bill to reform the federal prison system, the Formerly Incarcerated Reenter Society Transformed Safely Transitioning Every Person Act (H.R. 5682). This bill, also known as the FIRST STEP Act and sponsored by Representatives Doug Collins (R-Ga.) and Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), improves the federal prison system through the implementation of corrections policy reforms.

Washington, D.C. – The House Judiciary Committee today approved by voice vote the Protect and Serve Act of 2018 (H.R. 5698). This bill, authored by Congressman John Rutherford (R-Fla.), provides a significant deterrent for those seeking to attack police officers. Attacks against police officers continue to rise across the country. For instance, in July 2016, police officers in Dallas, Texas were ambushed and fired upon, resulting in the death of five police officers and injuring another nine.

Washington, D.C. -- On Tuesday, May 8 at 10:00 a.m., the House Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing titled, “Challenges and Solutions in the Opioid Abuse Crisis.” The hearing will examine best practices in international and domestic enforcement, and challenges and shortcomings in local prosecutions, treatment, and prevention. In 2016, more than 64,000 Americans died from drug overdoses. About 30 percent of these deaths resulted from an overdose of synthetic opioids like fentanyl, which can be as much as 100 times more powerful than painkillers such as morphine.
