Washington, D.C. – The House of Representatives today approved H. Con. Res. 72 by voice vote to express the sense of Congress that child safety should be the first priority in custody and visitation adjudications at family state courts. There is concern that state family courts are not adequately hearing and evaluating claims of child abuse and domestic violence during custody disputes. According to the Leadership Council on Child Abuse and Interpersonal Violence, an estimated 58,000 children a year are court-ordered into the unsafe custody or care of abusive parents.

Washington, D.C. – The House of Representatives today approved the Preventing Child Exploitation Act (H.R. 6847) by voice vote to fight child abuse and exploitation and bring perpetrators to justice. The bill, sponsored by Congresswoman Martha Roby (R-Ala.), contains four Judiciary Committee bills that have previously been approved by the House of Representatives, sending them to the Senate in one package for a vote. Washington, D.C. -- On Wednesday, September 26, 2018, the Subcommittee on Regulatory Reform, Commercial and Antitrust Law will hold a legislative hearing entitled “H.R. 3553, the Bankruptcy Administration Improvement Act of 2017.”  H.R. 3553, which was introduced on July 17, 2017, amends the Bankruptcy Code to raise the compensation of trustees in chapter 7 bankruptcy cases. Washington, D.C. – House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) today called on the Trump Administration to consult Congress immediately regarding the refugee ceiling for the coming year as required by law. Earlier this week, Department of State Secretary Mike Pompeo announced the fiscal year 2019 refugee ceiling without having first consulted with Congress. Chairman Goodlatte: “The law is clear: the Administration must consult with Congress prior to the President’s determination of the annual refugee ceiling. But this did not happen this year, and the Trump Administration has no excuse for not complying with their obligation under the law.
