House passes Reschenthaler bill supporting police officers
July 10, 2019
WASHINGTON — Rep. Doug Collins (R-Ga.), Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, released the following statement after Rep. Guy Reschenthaler’s (R-Penn.) legislation, the Supporting and Treating Officers in Crisis Act of 2019 (STOIC Act), passed the House with bipartisan support.
“The Supporting and Treating Offices in Crisis Act will help save the lives of law enforcement officers across the country. As the son of a Georgia State Trooper, I understand the sacrifices law enforcement officers and their families make every day. I’m encouraged by how many of my colleagues put their support behind this bill, and want to thank my friend, Congressman Guy Reschenthaler, for introducing this bill and helping send it to the president’s desk.”
The STOIC Act expands the statutory language of pre-existing family support grant programs to ensure those grants support suicide-prevention efforts, mental health screenings and trainings to identify and help officers at risk for suicide.
The STOIC Act passed the Senate as S. 998 in May 2019, and now heads to the president’s desk.
