House Judiciary Committee to Hold DOJ Oversight Hearing

Washington, D.C.  – On Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at 10:00 a.m., Attorney General Loretta Lynch will testify before the House Judiciary Committee on issues facing the Justice Department as well as the recent terrorist attacks in Paris. This is Attorney General Lynch’s first appearance before the Committee in her capacity as our nation’s top law enforcement officer. Established in 1870, the Department of Justice is the central agency for the enforcement of the United States’ federal laws. Below is a statement from House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) on the DOJ oversight hearing. Chairman Goodlatte: “At tomorrow’s oversight hearing, members of the House Judiciary Committee will examine several issues facing the Justice Department, including the implementation of the USA Freedom Act, efforts to reform the criminal justice system, the release of thousands of federal inmates – including serious violent criminals – as a result of the Sentencing Commission’s changes to drug sentencing guidelines, and technological advances and their impact on law enforcement activities. We will also discuss the Paris terrorist attacks with Attorney General Lynch to learn how the Department is assisting our ally and taking steps to prevent such attacks from occurring on U.S. soil. “Additionally, we will seek information about the disturbing politicization of the Justice Department under the Obama Administration, including officials at the Justice Department using mortgage settlements to funnel money to third-party activist groups and the Department’s decision to not pursue criminal charges against IRS employees who targeted conservative groups.
