House Judiciary Committee to Hold FBI Oversight Hearing

October 15, 2015
Washington, D.C. — On Thursday, October 22, 2015 at 10:00 a.m., Director James Comey will testify before the House Judiciary Committee at an oversight hearing of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Established in 1908, the FBI is a national security and law enforcement agency tasked with protecting the United States from terrorist threats and upholding and enforcing the criminal laws of the United States. The Bureau currently employs roughly 35,000 people. Below is a statement from House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) on this oversight hearing. Chairman Goodlatte: “In today’s post-9/11 world, the scope and mission of the FBI has expanded dramatically to respond to emerging threats. The FBI must now balance counterterrorism, counterintelligence, and cybersecurity responsibilities with its traditional law enforcement role. The House Judiciary Committee has an important responsibility to keep a watchful eye on the FBI to ensure it is fulfilling its missions and using its resources efficiently. “At next week’s oversight hearing, members of the House Judiciary Committee will examine several issues facing the FBI, including the implementation of the USA Freedom Act, the growing domestic terrorist threat from ISIS, technological advances and their impact on law enforcement activities, and management of the Bureau. I look forward to hearing from Director Comey and learning more about the challenges facing the FBI and how the FBI is addressing them.” This hearing will take place in 2141 Rayburn House Office Building and will be webcast live at /. Camera crews wishing to cover must be congressionally-credentialed and RSVP with the House Radio-TV Gallery at (202) 225-5214.
