Constitution Subcommittee to Hold Hearing on the Census

Washington, D.C. - On Friday, June 8 at 9:00 a.m., the Constitution and Civil Justice Subcommittee will hold a hearing titled, “Questions Regarding the U.S. Census.” The hearing will examine constitutional options the federal government has in determining how the U.S. Census, which occurs every ten years, is conducted and used. Witnesses for the hearing are:

• The Honorable Steve Marshall, Attorney General, Alabama
• Mr. J. Christian Adams, President and General Counsel, Public Interest Legal Foundation
• Dr. Steve Murdock, Professor, Rice University
• Dr. Steven Camarota, Director of Research, Center for Immigration Studies

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) issued the following statement in advance of the hearing. Chairman Goodlatte: “Tomorrow the Constitution Subcommittee will examine the role the U.S. Census plays in giving us a better picture of our nation’s composition.  The information collected by the census has serious implications for the distribution of Members of the House of Representatives in the apportionment process and in providing for equal voting power among qualified voters."
