Collins statement on administration’s third-country asylum rule
July 15, 2019
WASHINGTON — Rep. Doug Collins (R-Ga.), Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, issued the following statement in response to the joint Interim Final Rule on the asylum process announced by the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security today.
“The Trump Administration is right to continue its efforts to solve the border crisis with a new rule that helps return integrity to the asylum system by focusing resources on those most at risk of persecution. Ignoring the underlying policy flaws that encourage illegal immigration, abuse of our generous system and the exploitation of women and children is anything but compassionate. While Democrats refuse to take legislative action to stem the border crisis, America’s policy loopholes continue to fuel that crisis. Republicans have offered clear, simple solutions like the Fix the Immigration Loopholes Act to protect both migrants and American citizens, and it’s time to put partisanship aside and help the people suffering as a result of chaos at the border.”
