Washington, D.C. — On Wednesday, June 25th at 2:00 p.m., the House Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing entitled “An Administration-Made Disaster: The South Texas Border Surge of Unaccompanied Minors.” The hearing will examine the sudden surge of children, teenagers, and families arriving at ports of entry along the U.S.-Mexico border. The Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Office of Immigration Statistics estimates that the illegal migration of minors will grow from 6,000 last year to an estimated 142,000 in 2015. As of last week, DHS has seen about 50,000 minors attempting to cross into the United States and over 40,000 family members for FY 2014.
Many of the Obama Administration’s policies, such as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and the virtual rubberstamping of “credible fear” claims at the border, have led to this sudden surge of minors arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border. As information about the Obama Administration’s policies has spread, reports from Central America demonstrate that families and children come to the U.S. believing that they will not be turned away. In addition, Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez recently stated that people from his country are coming to the U.S. illegally because they hope to gain a legal status.
Witnesses for Wednesday’s hearing include:
- Mr. Tom Homan, Executive Associate Director, Enforcement and Removal Operations, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement;
- Mr. Ronald Vitiello, Deputy Chief of the U.S. Border Patrol, Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Department of Homeland Security;
- Mr. Chris Crane, President, National Immigration and Customs Enforcement Council 118, American Federation of Government Employees;
- Mr. Brandon Judd, President, American Federation of Government Employees National Border Patrol Council; and
- Most Reverend Mark J. Seitz, Bishop, Diocese of El Paso, Texas
Below is a statement from House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) on this week’s hearing.
Chairman Goodlatte: “President Obama’s refusal to enforce our immigration laws has resulted in a crisis of his own making along our southern border. Word has spread around the world about the Obama Administration’s lax immigration enforcement policies and it has encouraged thousands of children, teenagers, and families from Central America to come to the United States illegally. This surge shows no signs of stopping and could potentially get worse if President Obama further dismantles more of our immigration laws in August. At this week’s hearing, we will hear from those who are witnessing the disastrous effects of the President’s policies firsthand and will also demand answers from officials at the Department of Homeland Security on how they plan to quell this activity.”
Wednesday’s hearing will take place in 2141 Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing will be webcast live at judiciary.house.gov.
