Judiciary to Hold Oversight Hearings Wednesday

on Antitrust Enforcement Agencies

What: Oversight hearing on, "The Antitrust Enforcement Agencies: The Bureau of Competition of the Federal Trade Commission and the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice."

Where: 2141 Rayburn House Office Building

As part of its oversight function, the Rules of the House of Representatives require the Committee on the Judiciary to review and study the application, administration and execution of the antitrust laws by the Bureau of Competition of the Federal Trade Commission and the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice. The Committee last held a general oversight hearing on these two agencies in November of 1997 .

Currently...

• Both the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice enforce the antitrust laws. Because this is a general oversight hearing, Members may ask questions about any topic within the area of antitrust.

These oversight hearings will...

• Review the application, administration, execution, and effectiveness of these two antitrust enforcement agencies in all areas.

• Hear the testimony of a second panel of witnesses who will address the following topics of current interest in antitrust law: the FTC's authority to seek disgorgement in antitrust cases, the role of antitrust in the international realm, the Surface Transportation Board's antitrust authorities over the railroad industry, and the role of antitrust in the New Economy.
